Khalil Group Agreements
Core Principles
Collaborative efforts are the driving force behind scientific advancement. The Khalil Research Group's principles are straightforward declarations of the values and commitments that members of the group may choose to embrace. Externally, these principles reflect the mindset we aim to maintain in our scientific pursuits. Internally, they inspire and guide our daily practices. These principles are dynamic and can be updated or modified by the group whenever new members join or perspectives evolve. Open communication is key to resolving any conflicts. If any group member encounters issues related to these principles, Safiya is always approachable and ready for a constructive dialogue.
1. Respect as Our Foundation: We prioritize kindness and respect in every interaction, fostering a supportive environment for our community, colleagues, and ourselves. Collaboration is at the heart of our approach, as we believe that scientific progress is best achieved together, not at the expense of others.
2. Creating an Inclusive Community: Our lab is dedicated to building an inclusive environment where everyone feels they truly belong, whether within our group, at NYU Abu Dhabi, or in the broader academic world. We strive to ensure psychological safety and mutual respect, valuing each member’s unique contributions.
3. Equality in Practice: We operate with a horizontal structure where everyone, regardless of their role or experience, contributes equally to our shared mission. Each member is encouraged to share their voice, knowing that all opinions and ideas are valued.
4. Zero Tolerance for Discrimination: Our lab does not tolerate any form of harassment or discrimination. We commit to ongoing learning and taking responsibility for fostering an environment where all feel respected and included.
5. Learning from Our Mistakes: We recognize that mistakes are part of the scientific journey. We encourage honesty, self-reflection, and openness to feedback. We see every error as an opportunity to learn and grow, both individually and collectively.
6. Well-Being Over Output: We believe that personal well-being is more important than productivity. Our lab supports a healthy work-life balance, respecting each member’s boundaries and encouraging time for rest, reflection, and renewal. We understand that sustainable research requires sustainable researchers.
7. Fair Acknowledgment and Recognition: We are committed to giving fair credit to all contributors and collaborators. Every effort matters, and every voice deserves recognition, regardless of formal position or affiliation. We aim to communicate with respect, recognizing the unique value each person brings to our group.
8. A Culture of Helpfulness: We foster a culture where seeking and offering help is normalized and encouraged. Everyone in our group, regardless of experience, should feel comfortable asking for assistance or providing support to others, knowing that collaboration strengthens us all.
9. Integrity in Research: We hold ourselves to the highest standards of scientific integrity. Our research is thorough, transparent, and reproducible, and we are committed to sharing our findings honestly, even when the results are unexpected or challenging.
10. Reflecting on Our Impact: We aim to understand and consider the broader implications of our work. We reflect on how our research affects society, the economy, and the environment, with a focus on contributing to sustainable development and the energy transition.
11. Championing Open Science: We believe in open and accessible science as a catalyst for innovation and problem-solving. We are committed to sharing our data, methods, and findings whenever possible and using our position to advocate for open access and knowledge sharing within the scientific community.
